Back in 2008, Alec Distler started Distler’s Pretzels (at that time, “Alec’s Spicy Pretzels”) during his 8th grade year at Williston Central School in Williston, Vermont. He was required to do what his school called an “Eighth Grade Challenge”. He decided to learn about entrepreneurship and chose his family's spicy pretzels as his original product. It was his favorite snack and all of his family, teachers and friends loved them. Alec started selling the pretzels at the local Williston Farmer's Market on weekends and eventually began selling them in the local high school, Champlain Valley Union. Through this, Alec learned what it takes to start a business. Little did he know that his product would be a huge hit. The kids at the high school loved the product and soon local food stores began carrying the pretzels . Distler’s Pretzels quickly outgrew the Distler family kitchen. The business continues to grow and now boasts five flavors, Vermont Maple, Ranch, Spicy, X-tra Spicy and Fiery, all of which can be found in stores throughout Vermont and in parts of New England.
Alec’s project requirement for community service quickly turned into a relationship between Distler’s Pretzels and the Burlington Emergency Shelter. Distler’s Pretzels continues to donate 10% of its profits to the shelter and supports the betterment of society.
